Learn the meaning of pi (π) in maths. Simple explanation for kids about circles, circumference, and the importance of pi.
The symbol π (pronounced “pie”) represents a special number:
π ≈ 3.14159
It is the ratio between a circle’s circumference and its diameter — that means, no matter how big or small the circle, if you divide the circumference by the diameter, you always get the same number: π.
We use π to calculate important circle measurements:
Formula: C = 2πr
If a circle has a radius of 5 cm, then:
C = 2 × 3.14 × 5 = 31.4 cm
Formula: A = πr²
If the radius is 5 cm,
A = 3.14 × 5 × 5 = 78.5 cm²
Pi goes on forever without repeating — it’s an infinite decimal!
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 (3/14).
The π symbol was first used more than 250 years ago!
Draw a circle and measure around it (the circumference) and across it (the diameter).
Then divide the first number by the second — you’ll get around 3.14 every time! 🎉
Learning π helps kids understand geometry, fractions, and measurements.
It builds a strong foundation for higher-level maths and science.
